Our extensive five plus year search for a large-acorned water oak hybrid ended with two finds in one day…how it that for good luck?  The one we’re discussing now is most likely a cross with Nuttall oak which has huge quarter-sized acorns even larger than your average Nuttall!  Everyone knows the water oak’s claim-to-fame is the fact that they’ll grow about anywhere and always seem to produce heavy crops of hi-energy nuts just about every year, despite poor growing conditions.  Nuttall oaks are reliable croppers as well as super fast growers, but are mainly prized cause their acorns drop so late when most other food sources are about gone.  Add Nuttall’s tolerance to wet sites and incredibly fast growth to the mix and you’ve described the hybrid parent tree to a T! 

So lets go over this again: Fast growth, high carb-high fat jumbo sized acorns, mid to late season drop times, reliable crops, and tolerance to a wide range of sites.  ‘Texas’ water oak. Get you some!
